A Christmas Meme
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I use wrapping paper. I'm a purist and feel that gifts bags are the modern, easy way. Sometimes it's best to do things that take effort. I hate wrapping, but I do it every year en masse and for birthdays and events.
2. Real tree or Artificial? Oh, it has to be a real tree. And we always get the most beautiful tree from our best friends, who attend a family event in South Jersey to cut down beautifully grown Christmas trees to bring to their house and to ours.
3. When do you put up the tree? I guess around the second or third Sunday. That's usually when they come by with the huge tree and we get it in the base and usually string up the lights in it.
4. When do you take the tree down? It comes down New Year's Day, no matter what. It used to be left up for Luis to do, but he would leave the husk into July. So now, rain, snow or shine, down it comes on 1 January. He said something about it has to be up for some kind of teeny unknown Christian holiday; but you know how I feel about that.
5. Do you like eggnog? No. It is perfectly disgusting.
6. Favorite gift received? Two years ago I received my iPod Nano. That is my current favourite gift. I would say of all time, it is www.aislinge.com. Luis is really something else. Actually, one better - my ring. It has a heart shaped garnet, surrounded by little diamond chips, in white gold. It needs to be redipped at some point but otherwise it is as beautiful as when I got it eight or nine years ago.
7. Hardest person to buy for? Luis, always. What can I buy a guy with a salary that is roughly four times mine?
8. Easiest person to buy for? Oh, that is me, of course.
9. Mail or email Christmas cards? E-mail Christmas cards? Gads, no! I mail them.
10. Do you have a nativity scene? Over my dead body! Luis' father wanted to put up one in our front yard and I said no. I never want political or religious statements on my lawn. And certainly not Christian ones.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Oh, I get one every year. A Hummel ornament. It is just awful but Luis won't let me say anything to ensure I won't get one every year. It is heinous.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The regular Christmas movies are just awful.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? When I have the money or I see something that I know someone would want. This year it will be next Friday.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes, indeed I have; I used to think it was wrong until I kept getting those damned Hummels. I knew someone who loved Hummels and that was perfect for her. Now... well. I just toss them.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? I love smoked ham. My father does a great job with that.
16. Lights on the tree? As many strings as I can put up. I love lights. I usually use them in lieu of ornaments.
17. Favorite Christmas song? Barenaked Ladies' Uh... I forgot the name...
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? On Christmas Eve we go to who ever is holding Christmas among the family (my mother's side). On Christmas day, we go to my parents' house. With my mother in the sub-acute care facility, I don't know how the holidays will work this year.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer's? No, and I don't plan to. I can name the planets in the solar system and many volcanoes and this is much more meaningful.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? I'd like to find something that is unique and different and has nothing to do with religion. I would love to have Saturn on the tree.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Well, we do the present thing at my mother's family Christmas Eve dinner (after dinner, of course) on that night and then Luis and I usually exchange one gift each. All else is opened on Christmas Day.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? A lot of it is, and the commercialism is the worst part of it. And the commercialism is on both the part of the retail industry and the church... They are just plugging for different things. But after someone worked in Long Island was trampled to death at a Walmart and another coworker injured, I feel even more sour about it.
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I haven't many ornaments and I don't bother anyway. I put lights on the tree.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? The shorter list might be what I don't want!
26. Who is most likely to respond to this? The usual suspects! I'm not sending to everyone, though. I have a long list of e-mails and wouldn't bore all with it.
27. Who is least likely to respond to this? Not many that will get it.
